High-Achieving Teens

High-achievement can hide high distress

Strong grades, packed schedules, and ambitious goals do not always mean a teenager is thriving.

Behind their accomplishments, your teen may be experiencing:

  • Persistent worry or overthinking

  • Perfectionism and an intense fear of mistakes

  • Procrastination followed by last-minute panic

  • Difficulty starting or completing assignments

  • Academic burnout or loss of motivation

  • Irritability, frustration, or emotional outbursts

  • Difficulty sleeping or mentally switching off

  • Problems with concentration or organization

  • Avoidance of school, activities, or social situations

  • Physical symptoms connected to stress or anxiety

  • A feeling that nothing they accomplish is ever enough

Some teens become visibly distressed. Others continue performing at a high level while quietly feeling overwhelmed.

Their achievements tell only part of the story.

Anxiety, ADHD, and Perfectionism Can Overlap

It is not always easy to determine what is driving your teen’s behavior.

Difficulty concentrating may be connected to ADHD, anxiety, inadequate sleep, emotional distress, or a combination of factors. Procrastination may not reflect laziness. It can develop from overwhelm, executive-function difficulties, or a fear of producing anything less than perfect.

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation can help clarify what your teen is experiencing and identify the support that may be most appropriate.

Psychiatric Care That Looks Beyond the Surface

As a Teenager, Dr. Naidoo went to a rigorous academic high school in NYC- Townsend Harris High School at Queens College, and was accepted to several competitive universities and 8 year medical programs.  She did her undergraduate at the Ivy League School the University of Pennsylvania.  Now, as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University's Medical school- she supervises and mentors Child Psychiatry Fellows and Medical Students.

Depending on your teen’s individual needs, care may include:

  • A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation

  • Assessment of anxiety, ADHD, mood, and related concerns

  • Clear explanations of diagnostic findings

  • An individualized treatment plan

  • Therapy when clinically appropriate

  • Medication management when clinically appropriate

  • Consideration of sleep, nutrition, movement, and other lifestyle factors

  • Coordination with therapists and other treating professionals when appropriate

  • Guidance for parents supporting the treatment plan

Every recommendation is based on your teen’s history, needs, preferences, strengths, and treatment goals.

From Strive to Thrive

Striving can look productive from the outside while feeling exhausting on the inside. Thriving is different.

Thriving means learning how to pursue meaningful goals while also resting, adapting, asking for help, managing emotions, and maintaining a sense of self beyond accomplishments.

With appropriate care, your teen can begin working toward:

  • Greater emotional awareness and regulation

  • Healthier responses to pressure and setbacks

  • Improved concentration and organization

  • More sustainable academic habits

  • Increased confidence and self-understanding

  • Better communication at home

  • A healthier relationship with achievement

  • A life guided by purpose instead of constant pressure

Less Pressure. More Progress.
